As I was visiting my brother across the country this last weekend, he showed me a Bible verse memorizing app called Scripture Typer.  It helps in the memorizing process, and handles the review process so that you can hang onto the verses that are learned.

I got pretty excited by it.  A number of years ago I memorized quite a bit of Scripture, probably close to 700 or so verses.  I was good with the initial learning process and the review that made sure the verse stuck in my brain.  But as I added more and more verses I eventually lost control of the reviewing process.  That puts me in the current position of kind of knowing a lot of verses.  I can generally recall a number of verses, but there’s no way I could quote you the entire sermon on the mount like I used to be able to.  So I’m going to use Scripture Typer to aid in the recovery of those verses.

I was fishing around on the Scripture Typer site, and saw that there are groups to memorize different passages.  I poked around and found a couple groups with people I kind of know.  One is memorizing Mark, and the other Philippians.  In order to memorize those books before the end of the year, I would need to memorize a bit more than a couple verses a day.  This is really difficult, but not totally intimidating, because when I memorized in the past I got to the point where I was doing two verses a day pretty consistently, so I know it’s not outside my capability.  I’m also a sucker for a challenge, so I think I’m going to go for it!

I have some friends that are going to join me in the challenge by doing either pieces of Mark, or the book of Philippians with me.  I’m going to put up some posts about memorizing and the methodology to put some tools out there for the people that are interested in memorizing.  Hopefully you’ll find them useful.

And in case anyone is interested, I totally find a parallel between endurance sports and memorizing.  I’ll talk about that later.

Let me know if you’re interested in memorizing Philippians together by leaving a comment below!

And if anyone is wondering, I have no connections to the Scripture Typer app.
